SCOTS BOUNCE BACK IN THE NIGHTCAP AND THEY BEAT THE CALVIN KNIGHTS 4-0

The 2009 Alma Baseball team concluded a road doubleheader on Friday, by defeating Calvin College by a 4-0 score. The win earned a split for the Maroon and Cream and improved their MIAA record to 2-6 and their overall mark to 7-10. The Knights dropped to 7-3 in the league and 10-10 for the 2009 campaign.

After two scoreless innings in the nightcap, the Scots broke through with a run in the top half of the third inning. So. C Craig Brohl (Richmond, MI/Richmond) walked to lead off the frame and moved to second on a wild pitch. He moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by Sr. RF Bobby Jock (Wales, MI/Memphis) and scored on a single by Sr. 3B Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids, MI/Fulton-Middleton) for a 1-0 advantage.

Alma scored another run in the top of the fourth inning, as So. 1B Nate Smith (Battle Creek, MI/Harper Creek) reached on a lead-off error and scored when Jr. CF  Bobby Chasney (Warren, MI/Cousino) hit into a double-play.

Two innings later, the Scots closed out the scoring when they tallied two runs on two hits and an error. So. LF Nick Townsend (St. Clair Shores, MI/DeLaSalle) led off the frame with a single and stole second, before moving to third on a single by Sr. SS Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing, MI/Eastern).

Brohl was out on a sacrifice bunt that scored Townsend and moved Gonzalez-Morales to second base. Jock then reached on an error by the Calvin first baseman and allowed Gonzalez-Morales to score for what would be the final score of 4-0 for the Scots.

So. P Sam Shipman (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City West) threw the complete game shutout for the Scots, scattering five hits over seven innings, with three strikeouts and just one walk on the afternoon. Shipman improved his 2009 record to 3-2 with the win over the Knights.

The two teams will play two more games on Saturday at Klenk Park in Alma, beginning at 1:00 p.m.
