BASEBALL LOSES TO CALVIN 6-5 IN OPENING GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER ON FRIDAY

On Friday, the Alma Baseball team hit the road as they took on Calvin College at Grand Rapids, MI, for a league doubleheader. In the first game, the host Knights scored six runs in the first two innings and made it stand, as they came away with a hard-fought 6-5 victory. The loss dropped the Scots to 1-6 in the MIAA and 6-10 overall, while Calvin improved to 7-2 in the league and 10-9 on the 2009 campaign.

The Scots jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning when lead-off hitter, Sr. CF Bobby Jock (Wales, MI/Memphis) hit a single. He moved to second on a ground-out  by Sr. Adam Carrick (Essexville, MI/Essexville-Garber) and Sr. 3B Jeremy Stephens singled home Jock for the Alma lead.

Calvin responded with two runs on three hits off of Alma starting P Joe Thiry (Grand Rapids, MI/Grand Rapids Christian) in the bottom of the first, but the Scots tied the game at 2-2 in the top half of the second. With one out, So. LF Nick Townsend (St. Clair Shores, MI/DeLaSalle) singled and with two outs, moved to third on a single by Sr. SS Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing, MI/Eastern). Townsend scored when So. C Jay Sackett (Birmingham, MI/Groves) singled in the run.

The Knights scored their final four runs of the game in the bottom of the second, when Thiry walked the first two batters of the inning, both of which came around to score. Calvin also had two hits in the inning, one a two-run double, and there was one Scots error in the field. Because of the error, only one of the runs in the inning was earned.

Again, Alma responded by putting a run on the board in the top of the third inning and closed the gap to 6-3. With one out, Stephens singled and advanced to second on an error. After Stephens moved over to third on a fielder’s choice, So. 1B Nate Smith singled him in for the Alma run.

Both pitchers settled down for the next two innings, until Alma closed the gap to 6-5 in their half of the sixth inning. The Scots scored two runs on four hits, highlighted by RBI’s by PH Jr. Bobby Chasney (Warren, MI/Cousino) and Sackett.

However, Alma was unabke to tie the score in the top of the seventh inning, even though So. DH Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) walked with one out, giving the Scots a chance at deadlocking the contest.

Thiry did not give up a run after the second inning, while Stephens, Townsend and Sackett paced the Scots with two hits a piece. Sackett also finished with a team-high two RBI’s.
