SCOTS BASEBALL DROPS SECOND GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER AT ADRIAN, 8-3

In the second game of a “home” doubleheader played at Adrian College, the Scots dropped a 8-3 decision to the Bulldogs, dropping the Scots’ record to 0-4 in MIAA play and 5-7 overall on the 2009 season. Alma lost both games of the twin-bill that was scheduled to be played in Alma, but could not because of wet field conditions.

Adrian jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead in the first inning, off of Alma starting So. P Sam Shipman (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City West) and added another run in the top of the third for a 3-0 advantage.

The Scots responded in the bottom of the third inning, by scoring two runs of their own and cutting the lead to 3-2. Sr. 2B Adam Carrick (Essexville, MI/Essexville-Garber) singled with one out, but was out at second on an attempted double play on a grounder by Sr. 3B Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids, MI/Fulton-Middleton).

After So. 1B Nate Smith (Battle Creek, MI/Harper Creek) singled to move Stephens to second base, So. DH Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) singled, scoring Stephens and moving Smith to third. Yourchock then got caught and tagged out in a rundown, but Smith scored before the out to make the score 3-2.

However, Adrian responded to Alma’s offensive output with three runs of their of own in in the top of the fourth, as they scored three runs on three hits for a 6-2 lead. Alma countered with a run of their own in the bottom half of the frame, as So. RF Adam Rezmer (Bay City, MI/John Glenn) started with a single and advanced to third on a double by So. CF Bobby Chasney (Warren, MI/Warren-Couisno). Rezmer scored on a sacrifice fly by Sr. SS Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing, MI/Lansing Eastern).

That was it for the Scots however, as the only other runs scored in the game were by Adrian, as they crossed the plate twice in the top of the seventh inning. The Bulldogs were able to hang on for the 8-3 win and the four-game sweep of the Scots.

The Scots next play Albion College on Saturday afternoon, beginning at 1:00 p.m. at Klenk Park in Alma.
