ALMA BASEBALL TEAM DROPS FIRST GAME OF DOUBLEHEADER TO ADRIAN, 10-8

Alma's baseball team traveled to Adrian on Tuesday to play a scheduled home doubleheader that was moved south because of wet playing conditions on the Scots' home field. After falling behind by a score of 10-1 in the first game, Alma rallied with seven runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. But Alma could not get any closer and lost by a final score of 10-8.

Unfortunately, Alma could not get any closer and lost by a final score of 10-8. The loss dropped the Scots to 0-3 in the MIAA (5-6 overall), while Adrian improved to 4-1 and 9-7 in 2009.  The two teams were scheduled to play a second game 30 minutes following the first tilt.

The Scots took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when Sr. 2B Adam Carrick (Essexville, MI/Essexville-Garber) singled with one out, but was thrown out at third as Sr. 3B Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids, MI/Fulton-Middleton) singled and moved to second on the throw to third. So. 1B Nate Smith (Battle Creek, MI/Harper Creek) singled to right to score Stephens.

Adrian got on the board with two runs in the top of the third inning off of Alma starter Sr. P John Fillmore (Midland, MI/Midland) and added three more in the top half of the fourth for a 5-1 advantage. The Bulldogs scored two more runs off of Fillmore in the fifth inning to build a 7-1 lead.

After they were unable to score, Alma inserted So. P Jay Sackett (Birmingham, MI/Groves) for the sixth inning, but he was roughed up for three runs on four hits as Adrian took a 10-1 lead into the bottom half of the inning.

The Scots were not about to quit however, as they pounded out seven hits, scoring seven runs and cutting the deficit to 10-8 by the time the bottom half of the frame was over. Carrick led off the inning with a single, and Stephens moved pinch runner FR. IF Mike Bleise (Beal City, MI/Beal City) to second on a single. After Smith walked, the Scots had the bases loaded.

So. DH Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) hit a ground-rule double that scored two and left runners on second and third. So. RF Adam Rezmer (Bay City, MI/John Glenn) followed with a three-run homerun that narrowed the Bulldogs’ lead to 10-6.

After a pitching change, Alma had two quick outs until So. C Craig Brohl (Richmond, MI/Richmond) had a bunt single to keep the inning alive. So. LF Nick Townsend (St. Clair Shores, MI/DeLaSalle) followed with a single that advanced Brohl to third. After a walk to Bleise, Stephens singled up the middle for two runs batted in and closing the Adrian lead to 10-8. Smith flied out to left field to end the inning.

Yourchock pitched the seventh for the Scots and retired the Bulldogs, giving Alma a chance in the bottom half of the last inning. After Yourchock led off the Alma at bat with a single, the Scots had two strikeouts and the game ended when Sr. SS Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing, MI/Lansing Eastern) grounded out to second base to end the game.
