ALMA DEFEATS AQUINAS 11-5 ON WEDNESDAY

On Wednesday, the Alma Baseball team hosted Aquinas College out of Grand Rapids at Klenk Park, and won by a score of 11-5, on a cloudy, but dry afternoon. The victory improved the Scots’ record to 5-3 on the 2009 season.

After the Saints went scoreless in the top of the first inning, Alma Sr. 2B Adam Carrick (Essexville, MI/Essexville-Garber) singled with one out. He advanced to second on a wild pitch by Aquinas P Bryan Carey and scored on an RBI single by So. 1B Nate Smith (Battle Creek, MI/Harper Creek), giving the Scots a 1-0 lead.

Alma increased their lead to 2-0 in the bottom of the second inning, when So. LF Nick Townsend (St. Clair Shores, MI/DeLaSalle) had a lead-off single and moved to second on another wild pitch by Carey. He moved to third when Sr. RF Bobby Jock (Wales, MI/Memphis)  was called out at first because of going out of the baseline. Fr. 3B Richard Schreiber (Grayling, MI/Grayling) then grounded out to third, scoring Townsend.

In the top of the third, Aquinas got on the board with a run, but Alma struck back with two of their own in the bottom half of the inning. With two outs, So. DH Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak, MI/Royal Oak) reached on an error and went to second on a single by Townsend. Both runners advanced a base after a balk, and then Jock reached on an error, scoring Yourchock and moving Townsend to third. Townsend then scored on yet another wild pitch.

Heading into the bottom of the fifth inning, the Scots still led 4-1, but were looking for more runs. Alma scored three runs on four hits and left the bases loaded in an inning that saw Townsend net an RBI for the 7-1 advantage. Three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning expanded Alma’s lead to 10-1. In that sixth inning, Townsend recorded another RBI and So. OF Adam Rezmer (Bay City, MI/John Glenn), in for Jock, cranked a two-run homer for the final two runs.

Each team scored a run in the seventh and the Saints closed out the game with three runs in the ninth off of Scots So. P Cory Brohl (Richmond, MI/Richmond), but the Scots held on for the 11-5 win.

So. P Sam Shipman (Traverse City, MI/Traverse City West) came into the game in the fourth inning and per NCAA pitching rules, received the win for the game. Townsend ended up three for three on the afternoon, with three runs scored and two RBI’s, while Rezmer added another hit to his homerun to finish two of three.

Smth was two of three with an RBI, while Yourchock finished one of five, but scored three runs and had an RBI. Schreiber and Townsend each had two RBI’s for the Scots. The other Scots that pitched were Yourchock (8th) and Sr. Tony Garcia (Lapeer, MI/ Lapeer West), who pitched the sixth and seventh innings.
