ALMA BASEBALL DEFEATS GOSHEN COLLEGE 13-5 IN FIRST GAME OF 2009 HOME OPENER DOUBLEHEADER

In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Alma Scots Baseball team defeated Goshen College by a score of 13-5 at Klenk Park. The victory evened the Scots’ record to 3-3 on the season.

Alma broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the fourth inning, when they scored nine runs against Goshen. The visitors responded with five runs of their own in the top of the fifth inning, but the Scots scored three more in the bottom of the frame for a 12-5 advantage.

P Joe Thiry picked up the win for Alma by going five innings and giving up five runs, none earned, on three hits and two strikeouts. Sam Shipman and Jay Sackett eached pitched an inning to finish up the game, neither giving up any runs.

1B Joe Yourchock was two for five for the game and had four runs batted in, while SS/3B Jeremy Stephens, DH Adam Rezmer and 3B Richard Schreiber each had two RBI’s for the Scots.

Thirty-four percent of Alma students participate in intercollegiate athletics. Alma College competes at the NCAA Division III level as a member of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association, the oldest existing athletic conference in the nation.

Judd Folske

Judd Folske

Judd Folske is entering his first year as Alma College Head Baseball Coach in the 2007-2008 season after spending two years as an assistant coach with the program. Coach Folske joined the Maroon and Cream in the fall of 2005 after stops at NCAA Division I Central Michigan University, and stints at Div. II schools Saginaw Valley State University and Ferris State University. He also serves the athletic department as assistant athletic director.

While head coach of the CMU Chippewas, Folske posted a 131-98 mark. In 2000, he finished in a tie for first in the MAC conference with a record of 41-17 (18-8). Folske retired after the 2003 season at CMU, and went to work as an assistant at SVSU, where he worked in that capacity for two seasons.
