BASEBALL: Alma Ends Season with 5-4 Win Over First Place Adrian College
May 7, 2008
The 2008 Alma College Baseball Team (12-28, 8-20) endured a season of ups and downs but finished on a high as they defeated the first place Adrian College Bulldogs (30-10, 22-6) in the second game of today's double header, the season finale, by the score of 5-4.
The first game of the double header started in the afternoon, was delayed by rain, and then suspended until 6:00 p.m. where it and the second game were finished under the lights at Adrian College.
Two big innings by the Bulldogs was the difference in the game as they jumped out and scored six in the second and four more in the fifth to hold off the six runs scored in the final three innings by Alma, to take the 10-6 win.
Senior Scott Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant) got the start on the mound and went one and a third, picking up the loss, in his final appearance as a Scot.
Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton-Middleton), Bobby Jock (Wales/Memphis), and Nick Townsend (Saint Clair Shores/DeLaSalle) all had two hit performances in the loss and contributed three RBI's and three runs scored collectively.
The second half of the double header, and the Scots' season finale, gave us a glimpse of what may come next year as Alma went toe to toe with one of the best teams in the league and came away with a one run win.
Senior pitcher, Wade Slavik (Ashley/Fulton-Middleton), may have saved one of his best pitching performances of his career for last as he held the high powered Bulldog offense to four runs on eight hits in his complete game win.
The Scots' offense was propelled by the freshman Firstbase/DH combination of Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) and Adam Rezmer (Bay City/John Glenn) who each went deep in the game and were responsible for four runs batted in and two runs scored in the 5-4 win.
With the win, the Scots caused some intrigue atop the MIAA standings as if the Calvin Knights can sweep Kalamazoo College, they will win the Conference Championship and advance to the NCAA Tournament ahead of the Adrian Bulldogs who could have clinched with two wins today.
