BASEBALL: Scots Split with Hope
May 5, 2008
Alma, Mich.- After dropping two to the Hope College Flying Dutchmen (13-23, 11-13) over the weekend, the Alma College Baseball Team (11-25, 7-17) dropped game one of today's double header 7-3 and were in danger of the season sweep heading into the final matchup. However, the Scots showed character and fight as they played well and took gave four by the score of 9-6.
Game one of today's pair was the completion of the suspended game from last Friday and amongst the many unique features, saw a pitcher start the game, move to DH, and then come in in relief later on.
Matt Gorman (Gladwin) started the game last Friday and pitched three innings in which he gave up one run before the game was suspended. When the game resumed today, Gorman was moved to DH and Tony Garcia (Lapeer/West) started on the mound. After giving up seven hits and five runs in two innings, Garcia was pulled and Gorman once again took the mound for the Scots and through another solid inning on his way to his sixth no decision of the year. Garcia was charged with the loss to move to 0-3 on the year.
Offensively, the Scots were lead by Jeremy Stephens (Ashley/Fulton-Middleton) who went two for three with two runs scored. Freshman Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) did damage for the Scots as he went one for three with two RBI's and a run scored, all of which came on a monster blast over the right field fence. Adam Carrick (Essexeville/Jackson C.C.) added three hits in the game.
The second half of the twin billing was a back and forth battled that saw the Scots strike last to come out on top with the 9-6 win.
Hope struck first with a run in the top of the first but Alma answered back with three in the bottom half. Hope scored four more in the top of the second, but again the Scots answered with four of their own in the bottom of the third and were able to hold onto the lead to take the much needed conference win.
Joe Thiry (Grand Rapids/Christian) got the win on the mound for the Scots as he went six strong innings, allowing ten hits and six earned on his way to his 4th win of the season.
Yourchock continued to give the Hope pitchers fits as he put up a three hit, three RBI, and three run second game. Bobby Jock (Wales/Memphis) also got into the action as he went two for three two RBI's and a run scored while Nick Townsend (St. Claire Shores/DeLaSalle) also added a pair of hits and a pair of RBI's in the game.
The Scots have a quick turn around as they will face the Adrian Bulldogs tomorrow in their home finale. First pitch is schedule for 2 p.m.
