BASEBALL: Scots Lose Three to Olivet by a Total of Four Runs
April 27, 2008
Coming off a brutal double header against Tri-State, the Alma College Baseball Team (9-24, 6-14) had a chance to show what they were made of with a trio of games (including one make up from 4/10) against the Olivet Comets (15-16, 13-7) and despite being short on pitching, played the Comets to three close losses all by a margin of two or less.
In the postponed game from April 10, the Scots came out and grabbed the lead early scoring a run in the bottom of the first. However, the Comets rallied and hung a four spot on the scoreboard in the top of the fourth and held onto the lead, bringing hope the win 5-3.
Freshman Corey Brohl (Richmond) got the start and looked good at times, seven hits and five earned over six and a third innings but was hurt by the eight free passes he gave up on his way to dropping to 1-4 on the season.
From the plate, Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) and Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton-Middleton) both had one for four days and each knocked in one of the Scots' two RBI's in the game.
The young Maroon and Cream got a gem of a game out of junior Tony Garcia (Lapeer/West) in game two as he allowed only six hits and two runs in six innings while striking out four. Unfortunately, the Scots couldn't get anything going offensively as they were held to three hits in the game and Garcia fell to 0-2 on the season.
AC's only run of the game came in the second inning as Stephens reached on a single and advanced to third on an error before scoring on a fielder's choice play. Adam Carrick (Essexeville/Jackson C.C.) went two for four in the 2-1 loss.
After falling behind 3-0 early on in the night cap, Alma rallied to tie it up in the top of the fifth. However, the Comets added another run in the bottom of the inning and sent the Scots home with another heartbreaker by the score of 4-3.
In a his first collegiate start, freshman Sam Shipman (Travers City/West) was very impressive going the distance and only giving up three earned runs while walking none in the loss.
Also getting a rare start, freshman Adam Rezmer (Bay City/John Glenn) went three for four with an RBI while holding down first base. Ray Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon) went one for four with an RBI and a run scored and Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing/Eastern) added two hits for the Scots.
