BASEBALL: Scots Give Up 29 Runs in Sweep by Tri-State

April 26, 2008

Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Baseball Team (9-19, 6-11) held a one run lead going into the last inning of the first game of today's double header against the Tri-State Thunder (14-21, 8-15) but game up a seven spot to lose by the score of 13-7 and never recovered, falling in the second 16-6.

Alma got five solid innings from Matt Gorman (Gladwin) on the mound, who gave up five runs (two earned) on seven hits while striking out four before leaving in line for the win. However, the wheels fell off in the top of the seventh as the bullpen couldn't save the game, leading to yet another no decision for the senior pitcher.

Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing/Eastern) had a solid performance at the plate, going three for four with an RBI and two runs scored. Adam Carrick (Essexeville/Jackson C.C.) went two for three with a run scored and Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton-Middleton) and Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) each added a hit and two RBI's in the game.

Stephens continued to hit well as he went three for three with two runs scored. Ray Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon) had a three for four game and Bobby Chasney (Warren/Cousino) added two hits in the loss.

John Fillmore (Midland) picked up the loss on the mound, giving up eight earned on ten hits in three and a third.

The Scots will look to get things back together as they head to Grand Rapids to face off against Aquinas College on April 29th for a single game at 5/3 Park. First pitch is scheduled for 2:30 p.m.

The Alma College Percussion Ensemble performed at the prestigious Centrum Jazz Festival, an international festival in Port Townsend, Wash., in July 2007. Alma was the only college group invited to perform. “It’s a huge honor,” says faculty director Dave Zerbe. “You can’t apply to perform there; they seek you out.”
