BASEBALL: AC Gets a Split from TSU

April 24, 2008

Looking to finish their season with a run, the Alma College Baseball Team (9-17, 6-9) hit the long road to Angola, Ind. to take on the Tri-State Thunder (12-20, 6-15) and came away with split as they grabbed game one 9-1 before falling in game two 4-0.

The opener was all Maroon and Cream as they scored two in the top of the first and seven more in the fifth to cruise to a 9-1 win behind a lights out performance by junior pitcher Joe Thiry (Grand Rapids/Christian. Thiry got the complete game win while scattering seven hits and striking out seven in allowing no earned runs to the Thunder.

Fellow junior Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton-Middleton) got hot at the plate, going three for five with two RBI's and two runs scored. Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) went two for four with an RBI and a run scored and Jay Sackett (Birmingham/Groves) went one for three with two RBI's and a run scored on the way to the victory.

The night cap saw Alma's offensive production taper off as they were held to only three hits by solid Thunder pitching on their way to being shut out in the 4-0 loss.

Wade Slavik (Ashley/Fulton-Middleton) picked up the loss to fall to 2-5 on the season as he gave up four runs on nine hits in four and a third.

More than 100 Alma College students and staff traveled to destinations in New Mexico, Tennessee, Philadelphia, Louisiana and North Carolina for service projects during winter break in February 2007. “Alternative Break service experiences continue to gain popularity on Alma College’s campus,” says Sallie Scheide, assistant director in the Center for Responsible Leadership.
