BASEBALL: Scots Take Two From Short Handed Lions
April 6, 2008
Alma, Mi.- The Alma College Scots (6-12) grabbed a pair from the Finlandia Lions today by the scores of 4-3 and 17-6 in non league play. The Lions are in lower Michigan on a road trip and brought 13 players and unfortunately finished with 12 as they lost their first baseman and #3 hitter to a pulled hamstring halfway through the second game. The Scots were able to take advantage, bringing home their first wins of the year at Klenk Park and rebounding from a couple tough losses to Calvin on Saturday.
In the first game, the Scots found themselves trailing 3-1 heading into the bottom of the sixth but put together a three run rally to bring home the 4-3 win.
Tony Garcia (Lapeer/West) started on the mound for the Scots and pitched five innings, scattering three runs on four hits while striking out five in a no decision performance. Joe Thiry (Grand Rapids/Christian) came in and closed out the game, throwing two scoreless innings and getting the win to improve to 2-2 on the season.
Travis Maxey (Nove/Walled Lake) did most of the damage for the Maroon and Cream offensively, going one for three with two RBI's. Bobby Chasney (Warren/Cousino) also went one for three with an RBI and a run scored in the win.
In game two, the Scots really got their bats going, putting up eight runs in the first three innings and not looking back on their way to the 17-6 dominating win.
The game was patched together by the Scots relievers with the win going to Chasney despite giving up five unearned runs in one inning pitched. Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) pitched well in relief, going two scoreless innings.
Everybody got into the act offensively as nine batters got hits for the Scots and four of them had multi-hit performances. Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton Middleton) came in as a pinch hitter but finished the game going 3-3 with four RBI's and two runs scored. Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing/Eastern) went 3-5 with three RBI's and two runs scored and Craig Brohl (Richmond) stepped out from his usual role behind the dish, playing right field and going two for three with an RBI and two runs scored.
The Scots will return to MIAA action when they host Olivet College April 10th for a double header with first pitch scheduled for 2 p.m.
