BASEBALL: Scots Pick Up Two on Sunday Over Albion, Win Season Series 3-1
Mar. 30, 2008
After splitting with Albion College (3-13, 2-4) on Saturday, the Alma College Baseball Team (4-8, 3-1) returned to face the Britons for two more today and took them both in dramatic fashion, winning 4-3 and 8-7.
The Scots fell behind after giving up a run in the third but rallied back with three of their own in the fourth. The Britons tied it up with runs of their own in the sixth and seventh inning, but Alma came through with a game winning run in the bottom of the seventh as Bobby Jock (Wales/Memphis) got on base with a single and eventually crossed the plate on a throwing error.
Jock not only was responsible for the winning run, but in an outstanding performance from the plate, went two for two with all three of the Maroon and Cream's RBI's. Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton-Middleton) also had a multi-hit game for the Scots and scored a run.
Matt Gorman (Gladwin) started on the mound for the Scots and went six and a third innings, giving up three runs on six hits and striking out four. Despite Gorman's solid performance, the win went to Scott Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant) who got the two final outs of the game. With the win, Ribitch improves to 1-1 on the season.
The two evenly matched squads played another game that took all seven innings to decide the outcome, before the Scots came out victorious in the final match of the four game series by the score 8-7.
Albion jumped out to an early lead and held a seven to four lead going into the bottom of the sixth. Unfortunately for the Britons, Alma put four runs up on the board in the bottom of the sixth and with a lights out top of the seventh by Ribitch in relief, went on to take the win.
John Fillmore (Midland) started the game and scattered eight hits and six runs in four and two thirds while striking out four. Corey Brohl (Richmond) had his second straight solid relief appearance, going an inning and a third and picking up his first collegiate win before handing the ball over to Ribitch who earned the save.
Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) provided five of the Scots runs, going one for two from the plate and knocking in three RBI's and scored two runs. Ray Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon) went two for three with two runs scored and Stephens went one for three with a run scored and an RBI. Bobby Chasney (Warren/Cousino) who dazzled with his glove in centerfield all weekend, went 0-3 from the plate but put the ball in play and made things happen, scoring two of the Scots' runs
