BASEBALL: Scots Drop a Pair to Goshen; 5-0, 9-2
Mar. 15, 2008
The Alma College Baseball Team had their home opener cancelled but managed to pick up a double header in Goshen, Indiana against the Goshen Maple Leaves and although they dropped the pair, 5-0 and 9-2, they managed to get some much needed work outside before their conference schedule starts.
Joe Thiry (Grand Rapids/Christian) got the start on the mound in the opener and threw well, holding the Leafs scoreless before giving way to Wade Slavik (Ashley/Fulton-Middleton) who ended up getting the loss.
Adam Carrick (Essexville/Jackson C.C.) and Bobby Chasney (Warren/Cousino) each went 1-4 from the plate while Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton-Middleton) and Joe Yourchock (Royal Oak) both had 1-3 performances.
In the second game, the Scots jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first as Carrick doubled and was moved to third on an infield sac by Chasney before scoring on a passed ball. However, with two outs in the bottom of the second, the Leafs rallied to retake the lead and never looked back as they went on to take the 9-2 win.
Corey Brohl got the start and the loss for the Scots in two innings pitched.
Carrick went 1-3 with a run scored in the game while Chasney went 2-4 to finish with a three hit day. Brad Gray (West Bloomfield), Chris Reiter (Ferndale), Luke Grover (Vestaburg) and Dan Gozalez-Morales (Lansing/Eastern) all added hits in the game and were mentioned by Head Coach Judd Folske for their play.
"'We didn't play our best ball today, but we got some work in that we really needed. I told the guys that the first season is over and that we need to get ready for the second season that starts on Wednesday," added Folske.
The Maroon and Cream will start their "second season" as they are scheduled to host MIAA rival, Adrian College, on Wednesday the 19th for a double header. Play is set to begin at 2 p.m.
