BASEBALL: Scots split with Albion
Klenk Park was the venue for two hard fought MIAA baseball games today as each team rallied in the seventh inning to bring home wins and a split of the Alma-Albion double header.
Albion completely dominated the first five and a half innings running up a 7-0 lead in the first game. The Scots, determined not to be shut out on senior day, rallied in their half of the sixth and tied up the game, stringing together five hits. Albion took the lead back in the top of the seventh 8-7, but behind an RBI single by sophomore Jeremy Stephens (Maple Rapids/Fulton-Middleton) and a passed ball run scored by senior Dan Merion (Milford), the Scots gladly walked away with the conference win.
Milford native, senior Mike Slesinksi, was 1-3 on the day with two RBIs and freshman Dan Gonzales-Morales (Lansing/Eastern) also went one for three with two ribbies. Senior Josh Reece (Norton Shores/Muskegon Mona Shores) and Jeremy Stephens each added RBIs and runs scored in the Scots winning effort.
Sophomore Tony Garcia (Lapeer/Lapeer West) cleaned up for John Fillmore (Midland), earning the win, pitching two two hit innings. Fillmore gave up six earned in five innings off seven hits, getting the no decision.
After trailing 1-0 for five innings in the second game, the Scots put a two run sixth together to take the lead before giving back three runs in the top of the seventh and getting the 4-2 loss.
Junior Matt Gorman (Gladwin) tossed five and a third solid innings only giving up one run in the no decision. Senior Tom Montgomery (Decatur, Ind./Big Rapids) got the loss for the Scots as he gave up three runs in the seventh after getting Alma out of a bases loaded jam in the sixth.
Jeremy Stephens had the Scots only RBI of the game when he hit in junior Ray Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon) in the sixth. Dan Merian scored Alma's only other run in the game when he scampered home on a pass ball after reaching on a walk.
The Scots travel to Albion tomorrow for the second set of two in the four game series. The games are scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
