BASEBALL: Scots splits with conference foe Adrian

ALMA SPLITS WITH CONFERENCE LEADING ADRIAN

Alma, Mi.- Behind a strong pitching performance by sophomore Joe Thiry (Grand Rapids/Grand Rapids Christian) the Alma College Men's Baseball team defeated Adrian College 7-1 before dropping the second game 1-11.

Thiry threw seven innings scattering four hits, allowing one run, and tallying two strikeouts on his way to the win. Adrian jumped on the board first in the top of the third manufacuring their only run of the game. Alma bounced back when they were at the bat scoring three runs on a trio of singles from freshman Dan Gonzalez-Morales (Lansing/Eastern), junior Ray Foley (New Hudson/South Lyon), and senior Mike Slesinski (Milford). Alma added three more runs in the bottom of the sixth including a two run bomb over the right field fence by sophomore Bobby Jock (Wales/Memphis) securing the 7-1 victory.

Junior Aaron Assman (Mt. Pleasant) contributed to the winning effort with a two hit game.

Junior Wade Slavik (Ashley/Fulton-Middleton) started the second game of the double header on the mound and was the victim of Adrian's bats heating up. Slavik surrendered nine earned runs on 10 hits in four and two thirds innings.

The Scots got their only run of the game when Gonzalez-Morales scored on a fielders choice of the bat of Foley. Senior Josh Reece (Norton Shores/Muskegon Mona Shores) went 1-2 while playing solid defence at first base. Jock added Alma's only other hit in the game.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.
