BASEBALL: Twelve Innings End in Alma 2-1 Victory, Second Game Suspended in 2-2 Tie
Alma College baseball won in 12 innings at Olivet College Friday, 2-1 over the Comets. The Scots were down by a run after the first inning, scored in the top of the fifth when Bobby Jock singled to give Alma a base runner with one out. He stole second before Dan Merian got on base with a throwing error by the third baseman. A Ray Foley sacrifice fly scored Jock to tie the game at 1-1. Alma is now 4-13 overall and 3-8 in the MIAA.
It was stranded in a tie through 11 innings until the top of the 12th when Mike Slesinski got on base when he was hit by pitch with one out. He moved to second on a Mike McAlpin ground out to second and scoring on a fielding error by the second baseman. Jeremy Stephens made the final out of the game for Alma with a ground out to third base. The Comets came back to put a runner on base when he was hit by a pitch by Stephens. A sacrifice bunt moved Olivet's runner along to second base. Ultimately, the runner was out at home with a throw from left to the shortstop to the catcher. The final batter in the order singled to give Olivet another base runner. The runner then moved to second on a wild pitch with two outs. At the top of the order, Shelhart fouled out to the pitcher to end the game at 2-1 in Alma's favor after 12 innings.
It marks the fourth game of the season that has gone into extra innings for Alma and the second extra inning win. Alma entered the game with a 13-inning loss to Tri-State. Jeremy Stephens picked up the win on the mound to move to 1-1 on the season. John Fillmore went 11 innings, striking out three people in 42 batters faced. Fillmore allowed just six hits and one run - no earned runs - in his 11 innings of work.
In the second game, Alma and Olivet suspended the game through five innings in a 2-2 tie. A complete recap of game two will be available following its conclusion Saturday.
