Alma Hot Against Olivet; Thiry Throws Complete Game One Shutout

ALMA, Mich. - Alma baseball picked up two MIAA wins with convincing victories against Olivet Thursday at Klenk Park to improve to 11-12 overall and 7-9 in MIAA play.

Alma started out hot in game one, scoring three runs in the first, second and fourth innings and adding another for good measure in the fifth while freshman pitcher Joe Thiry shut out the Comets, scattering just five hits on the day while striking out five in seven innings of work.

Olivet's defense helped the Scots to generate 10 runs as just three of Alma's runs were earned on the day, a result of five Comet errors in the field. Key hitters for the Scots in game one included Pat McGuire (Clare) who went 2-for-4 with three runs and an RBI while Mike Zuehlke (Mt. Pleasant) was 2-for-3 with a run and three RBI.

Game two saw the Scots off to a quick start, scoring two runs in the first when Olivet answered with its first run of the day in the top of the second. But the Scots added two more in the bottom of the second and a single run in the bottom of the sixth.

Matt Gorman threw the complete game for Alma, striking out four and scattering five hits in seven innings of work, allowing one earned run.

Ray Ribitch was 2-for-4 at the plate with three runs and two stolen bases while Dan Merian (Milford) also carded two stolen bases.

Alma returns to action Saturday when it makes the return trip to Olivet at 1 p.m.
