Alma defeats Augustana with Wade Slavik on the mound.

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The baseball team opened play at the Gene Cusic Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla., Sunday with a doubleheader loss to Concordia (Minn.) and followed that up with a victory against Augustana.

In the first games, Brandon Teenier (Holly) started on the mound but did not get the loss in the 7-6, eight-inning defeat as John Fillmore (Midland) was called in to replace the senior.

In the second game of the day, Brandon Shorter (Alanson) took the 8-6 loss, though Tom Montgomery (Decatur, Ind./Big Rapids) was called in late, to no avail.

Against Augustana on Monday, Alma won 10-6 with Wade Slavik (Ashley/Fulton-Middleton) getting the win for the Maroon and Cream. Jim Hunsanger (Lapeer/North Branch Wesleyan) picked up the save. Alma out-hit Augustana 13-12.

"We are hitting the ball well and playing really solid baseball," said head coach John Leister.

The Scots continue play at the Gene Cusic Classic throughout the week.
