Scots Stumble Against K’zoo
Box Score
ALMA, Mich. - Alma College baseball (8-18, 8-8 MIAA)
suffered a setback Friday as Kalamazoo took the first game of the
three-game series, 8-3, at Klenk Park. A Pete Ott (East Lansing) home run highlighted the Scots’ outing, the first of the junior’s career.
Kalamazoo jumped to an early lead as Alma starting pitcher Brandon Teenier (Holly)
struggled through three innings of work striking out just two and
allowing four runs on nine hits. The Hornets scored two in the first
inning and two again in the third to take a 4-0 lead.
The Scots answered in the bottom of the second, working the bases for one run. Calvin Bassil (Jeddo/Croswell-Lexington) took his base on balls before Justin Evans (Bay City/Bay City Western) flied out to the catcher. A Mike Zuehlke (Mt. Pleasant) single up the middle moved Bassil to second before an Adam Jerry (St. Louis) single advanced Zuehlke and scored Bassil from second. When Pat Ott (East Lansing) was hit, it loaded the bases for Pete Ott but the junior could not convert, grounding out to shortstop to end the inning.
Kalamazoo posted four more runs in the eighth inning as a questionable
call at the plate allowed the Hornets to put one run on the board,
leaving the bases loaded.
Down seven in the bottom of the ninth, the Scots mounted a charge as MIAA stolen base leader Ray Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant)
took first after being hit by the pitch. The ensuing play got the
quickest baserunner in the league out at second, allowing Pat Ott to
take first on a fielder’s choice. Pete Ott stepped in and sent the ball
deep over the wall in left field to add two more runs to the Scots’
total.
Will Eubank (Lansing/Everett) threw six inning in relief for the Scots, striking out four and allowing four runs on four hits.
The Scots and the Hornets face again in doubleheader action tomorrow (Apr. 30) in a 1 p.m. game at Klenk Park.
