Alma Splits With Calvin

Game One - Box Score
Game Two - Box Score

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - Alma College baseball split with Calvin Monday afternoon in a make-up from the weekend as the Knights won game one, 7-0 and Alma took the secon game, 7-5.

In the first game, Brandon Teenier (Holly) took the loss on the mound, throwing 3.2 innings, scattering eight hits and allowing only two earned runs of a total six in his time on the hill. Brandon Shorter (Alanson) came in to close with 2.1 innings of work, allowing one earned run on one hit, striking out one.

Alma allowed two runs in the bottom of the first, four more in the fourth and another in the bottom of the sixth in the shutout. The Scots generated just three hits in the first game, recording three errors for the game while Calvin played error-free on nine hits.

In game two, Calvin again jumped to an early 2-0 lead with two runs in the bottom of the first before the Scots finally answered with three runs in the top of the second. Pat McGuire (Clare) led off the inning with a ground-out to second while Calvin Bassil (Jeddo/Croswell-Lexington) went down swinging to give Alma two outs. Justin Evans (Bay City/Bay City Western) put a runner on base with a single into center field. A walk to Jim Wegener (Hemlock) gave Alma two runners on base with two outs. Mike Zuehlke (Mt. Pleasant) homered to give the Scots a one-run advantage before Shorter popped up to end the inning.

The Scots put up another run - the difference in the end - in the top of the third when Ray Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant) got on base with a fielding error and, true to form, stole second. Pete Ott (East Lansing) was caught looking before brother Pat Ott (East Lansing) singled up the middle to plate Ribitch. McGuire suffered the same fate as Pete Ott before Bassil singled and advanced to second, moving Pat Ott to third. An Evans fly out ended the inning.

The Knights would score in the bottom of the third, but would not get any closer as the Scots posted an additional run in the top of the fifth and two more in the sixth. Calvin matched with two in the bottom of the sixth, but could not generate any more offensefor the game.

Adam Jerry (St. Louis) picked up the win for the Maroon and Cream, throwing six innings, striking out five and scattering six hits, allowing five runs - only two earned. Shorter came in to close the game, working one inning. Jerry is 2-0 on the season while the team moves to 7-11 (7-7 MIAA).

The Scots face Calvin again tomorrow (Apr. 26) at 4 p.m.
