Scots Strike Back With 3-2, 8-6 Victories at Tri-State

ANGOLA, Ind.
- The Alma College baseball team improved to  6-9 (6-6 MIAA) with 3-2 and 8-6 wins at Tri-State Saturday (Apr. 16).

In game one, the Scots scattered single runs in the third, fifth and eighth innings. Pete Ott (East Lansing) went 3-for-4 on the day, scoring one run and an RBI while Adam Jerry (St. Louis) and Jim Wegener (Hemlock) scored the Scots' other runs. On the mound, Brandon Shorter (Alanson) picked up the win to move to 2-3 on the season, throwing two innings and scattering two hits while striking out three.

Tri-State got on the board first with a run in the bottom of the first and the Scots answered in the top of the third when Wegener was hit to give the Scots a baserunner. Ray Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant) then ground out, advancing Wegener to second. Pete Ott singled to move Wegener to third while Pat Ott (East Lansing) reached on a fielder's choice as Pete was tagged at second, allowing Wegener to score the tying run. A Pat McGuire (Clare) fly out to short ended the inning.

The Maroon and Cream scored the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth when Jerry singled to give the Scots a baserunner to lead off the inning. Wegener ground out to the pitcher as  Jerry moved to second. Ray Ribitch's fly out to center field gave Alma two outs and with a Pete Ott single, Jerry touched home to give the Scots a one-run margin.

Tri-State scored again in the seventh to even things and send the first game of the doubleheader into extra innings, but Alma answered when Pete Ott led off the inning with a double. Pat Ott flied out to right field for the first out, sending Pete to third. McGuire generated a sacrifice fly to center, scoring Pete. Calvin Bassil's fly out ended the inning and giving Tri-State one more chance, but the Thunder couldn't get rolling, ending the game in Alma's favor, 3-2.

In game two, Alma carded 13 hits, plating eight runs. The Scots opened scoring with a single run in the first and when Tri-State put a run up in the bottom of the fourth, the Scots answered with four runs in the top of the fifth. The Thunder answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. The teams traded efforts with a single run from the Scots in the top of the sixth and two runs from the Thunder in the bottom of the sixth tied things up at 6-6.

Alma showed poise in the top of the seventh when Pat Ott singled to lead off the inning. A McGuire single moved Pat to second base and both runners moved ahead a base on a wild pitch. A Justin Evans single scored Ott and McGuire. The inning continued with another hit when two runners were stranded on base.

The Thunder went down in order in the bottom of the inning as the Scots walked away with an 8-6 victory.

Adam Jerry moved from shortstop in game one to the pitcher's mound, tossing a complete seven-inning game, scattering five hits and striking out six.

Judd Folske

Judd Folske

Judd Folske is entering his first year as Alma College Head Baseball Coach in the 2007-2008 season after spending two years as an assistant coach with the program. Coach Folske joined the Maroon and Cream in the fall of 2005 after stops at NCAA Division I Central Michigan University, and stints at Div. II schools Saginaw Valley State University and Ferris State University. He also serves the athletic department as assistant athletic director.

While head coach of the CMU Chippewas, Folske posted a 131-98 mark. In 2000, he finished in a tie for first in the MAC conference with a record of 41-17 (18-8). Folske retired after the 2003 season at CMU, and went to work as an assistant at SVSU, where he worked in that capacity for two seasons.
