Tempers Flare as Britons edge Scots

ALMA, Mich.-- The Alma College Scots recieved another
sparkling pitching performance against a conference foe, but could not
preserve a victory in the Scots’ 2-1 loss to Albion. Sophomore Brandon Shorter (Alanson),
went above and beyond the call of duty by pitching all ten innings in
the loss to Albion. For the game Shorter allowed eight hits, two
runs (one earned), two walks and struck out seven.
The Scots appeared to have momentum on their side heading to the bottom
of the ninth tied 1-1. In the top half of the inning the Scots
foiled an attempted double steal when Pat Ott (East Lansing) held
on to the ball after being run over at the plate by Albion shortstop
Brian Sayers. Tempers flared as both dugouts were on their feet
heading to the bottom of the inning. Adam Jerry (St. Louis) would
hit a leadoff single and it appeared the Scots may be able to scratch
across the winning run, but a strikeout and a double play later the
game would head into extra innings.
Albion’s Nate Hawley would get his only hit of the game in the top half
of the 10th, a single, and after being sacrificed over to second and
advancing to third on another single, he would score the deciding run
on a sacrifice fly to center.
The Scots again appeared to be mounting a comeback in the bottom of the 10th when Ott singled to start the inning. Mike Zuehlke (Mt. Pleasant) would bunt him over to second, giving the Scots the tying run in scoring position with only one out. Pat McGuire (Clare)
would follow with what appeared to be the game tying hit, a diving line
drive to center. A diving catch - as ruled by the umpire -
later, and the Scots had lost the contest 2-1. The umpire’s call
that the ball had been caught had head coach John Leister racing out to
the field to contest the call, before the play had ended.
The Scots return to action Monday when they host Hope College in a makeup game. Game time is set for 3 p.m.
