Alma earns split with conference rival Albion

ALMA, Mich. -  Reigning MIAA Pitcher of the Year, Brandon Teenier (Holly) threw a two hit shutout in the opening game of Saturday’s doubleheader with Albion, to lead the Maroon and Cream to a 1-0 victory.   Teenier worked all seven innings for the Scots, racking up five strikeouts and walking just two.

The game appeared to be headed to extra innings as Albion’s starter, Dave Seales, was just as effective.  Seales had a no-hitter into the sixth, and did not have a runner advance to second base until the bottom of the sixth.  The Scots were able to muster the game’s only run in the bottom of the seventh when Mike Zuehlke (Mt. Pleasant) singled, and was replaced on the base paths by Scott Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant)Pat McGuire (Clare) followed with a sacrifice bunt, and reached base on an error.  A walk to Josh Reece (Muskegon/Mona Shores) would load the bases.  Pete Ott (East Lansing) would come through with a sacrifice fly to center field, allowing Ribitch to score from third.

Game two saw the Scots manage just three hits, as the Albion bats came alive, resulting in a 12-0 defeat for the Scots.  Justin Evans (Bay City/Western), Zuehlke, and Ott singled for the Scots.  Freshman Wade Slavik (Fulton) started for the Scots and took the loss.  With the split the Scots record now stands at 3-3 (3-1 MIAA).

The Scots host Albion Sunday at 1 p.m. in a make-up of the game that was cancelled on Friday (April 1).

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.
