Scots Start Season With Double-header Losses to Christopher Newport

FT. MYERS, Fla. - The Alma College baseball team opened its season Tuesday (Mar. 1) with two losses to Christopher Newport in the Gene Cusic Collegiate Classic in Ft. Myers, Fla. Alma dropped the first game 6-1 and the second 15-0 to open the season.

In the first game, Brandon Teenier (Holly) led the Scots from the mound, throwing six innings, striking out 11 and walking four, allowing nine hits and five earned runs. The Scots lone run came in the third inning when senior Adam Jerry (St. Louis) singled to give the Scots a baserunner. Ray Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant) singled to put runners at first and third for the Maroon and Cream before being picked off in a bizarre scenario when an apparent balk became a legitimate pick. With Jerry at third, junior Pat Ott (East Lansing) double to drive Jerry home for the Scots only run of the day.

Ott went 2-for-2 on the day with an RBI double and base-on-balls while Jerry went 1-for-3 as did Ribitch. Freshman Scott Ribitch (Mt. Pleasant) pinch hit for the Scots, going 1-for-1.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ’08, students toured cultural sites in Argentina, studied lizards in Jamaica, analyzed World War II topics at the British National Archives in London, performed music in Italy, and examined the natural wonders of New Zealand.
