Ribitch Ties Stolen Base Record; Scots Split with Olivet
In the Saturday, April 10, doubleheader against Olivet College, sophomore Ray Ribitch of Mt. Pleasant tied the 47-year-old single-season stolen base record previously held by Charles Morrison. With a stolen base in the first game, Alma’s talented left fielder notched his 23rd steal of the year tying him with Morrison. Alma went on to win the first game 4-1 and dropped the second game 9-5.
Freshman Brandon Shorter, Alanson, took the mound for the Scots in the first game of the double-header and scattered six hits over seven innings while striking out six and allowing only one run in his second win of the season.
The Scots jumped out to an early lead and never trailed in the game. A strong defense to go with four runs was more than enough for Shorter to bring home the victory. Ribitch went 2-3 from the plate and scored a run for the Scots. Ryan Holbrook, Bath junior, went 1-1 knocking in a run and scoring once. Freshman right fielder Dan Merian, Milford, went 1-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
With the Scots young rotation depleted, Freshman Tom Montgomery, Big Rapids, was asked to come in and pitch quality innings for the Scots in the second game. He scattered five earned runs over six innings but several defensive errors by the Scots contributed to a four-run third inning that provided Olivet with a big lead. Offensively for the Scots, Ribitch and Merian both came through with a hit and a run scored. Hemlock senior Jim Wegener went 2-3 from the plate and scored two runs for the Scots.
The Scots are in the classroom this week for final exams and take the field again Friday, April 16, for a two-day series with Tri-State University. The Friday nine-inning game starts at 4:00 p.m., and the Saturday double- header is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
