ALMA MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TENNIS TEAMS COMPETE SATURDAY AFTERNOON IN SUNNY ORLANDO, FLORIDA

The Alma Women’s Tennis team had their first tennis match Saturday afternoon against Brandeis University (MA) in sunny Orlando, Florida. The Scots played very well but lost to Brandeis by a score of 8-1. They will next play on Sunday, when they compete against Concordia College of Florida at 11:00 a.m.

The singles lineup was Laura McKendry at one singles, Amy Baranowski at two singles, Jennifer Meloche at three singles, Abby McCue at four singles, Emily Noss at five singles, and Heather Spratt at six singles.

The doubles lineup was Laura McKendry and Jennifer Meloche at one doubles, Amy Baranowski and Emily Noss at two doubles, and Kelsey Erwin and Abby McCue at three doubles. The results of the match was 0-6;0-6 for one singles, 3-6; 2-6 for two singles, 2-6; 0-6 for three singles, 1-6; 0-6 for four singles, 1-6; 2-6 for five singles and 3-6; 6-3; 10-5 (tie breaker) for six singles.

The results for the doubles teams was 2-8 for one doubles, 2-8 for two doubles, and 1-8 for three doubles.  Heather Spratt played extremely well in her singles match and won in a very close game. Heather lost the first set, won the second set, and ended up winning the match with a close tiebreaker.

The men’s tennis team also played today in Orlando against Brandeis. The Scots competed well but lost to Brandeis 9-0. The Scots play Webber Internationl University (FL) on Sunday afternoon.

The singles lineup was Dan Fraser at one singles, Kace Lovejoy at two singles, Alex Montoye at three singles, Mark Stuart at four singles, Zack Kerr at five singles, and Ben Schippers at six singles.

The doubles lineup was Dan Fraser and Kase Lovejoy at one doubles, Alex Montoye and Mark Stuart at two doubles, and Zack Kerr and Ben Shippers at three doubles. The results of the match for singles was 1-6; 3-6 for one singles, 0-6; 0-6 for two singles, 1-6; 2-6 for three singles, 2-6; 2-6 for four singles, 1-6; 5-7 for five singles, and 2-6; 2-6 for six singles. 

The results of the match for doubles were 1-8 for one doubles, 1-8 for two doubles, and 4-8 for three doubles.  The men’s tennis team’s record is now 3-1.
   

 

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.

 

Coach Profile

Gordon Aldrich

Gordon Aldrich was a late addition to the Alma College Coaching Staff in the summer of 2007. Coach Aldrich has joined the Alma College Family as the Cross Country and Track and Field Head Coach.

During his 26 years as a varsity Boy’s and Girl’s Cross Country Coach, Aldrich has won a Girls Open State Championship (1978), a Girls State Championship (1995), two Boy’s State Championships (1994, 1997), and was Runner-up on seven other occasions. During the same time, Aldrich coached teams to 17 conference championships, was nominated for the Michigan Interscholastic Track Coaches Association Coach of the Year 12 times for cross country, and walked away with the award four times (1994, 1995, 1996, and 1998). He was also named the Boy’s Cross Country National Coach of the Year in 1999 by the National Federation Interscholastic Coaches Association.

Aldrich was also honored with Michigan High School Coaches Association Track Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1998, and has received the Charles Sweeney Michigan Coaches Hall of Fame Track and Field Award.
