Brehm Awarded NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship
Josh Brehm, an Alma College senior from Ithaca and the 2006
Gagliardi Trophy recipient as the best player in Division III football,
has been awarded a $7,500 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.
The NCAA awards up to 174 postgraduate scholarships annually, 87 for
men and 87 for women. The scholarships are awarded to student-athletes
who excel academically and athletically and who are in their final year
of intercollegiate athletics competition. The one-time scholarships are
awarded for fall, winter and spring sports at the end of each season.
“This is a tremendous honor for both Josh and Alma College,” said John
Leister, interim athletic director. “Josh is the consummate
scholar-athlete, and I am proud that Alma College was able to give him
the platform to shine both athletically and academically.”
Brehm is the 12th Alma College athlete to receive the NCAA Postgraduate
Scholarship, and the first since Dustin Armstrong in 2000. Other
recipients have included Keith Bird in 1967, John Becker in 1969, John
Fuzak in 1970, Don Yehle in 1971, Stuart TenHoor in 1976, Todd Friesner
in 1979, Kelly Spaulding in 1990, Rainy Inman in 1997, Marisa Proctor
in 1998, and Eric Brands in 1999.
Brehm concluded an extraordinary football career in November that
culminated with his receipt of the Gagliardi, the Heisman Trophy
equivalent for Division III football. He also was named to Don Hansen’s
Football Gazette Division III All-America team.
As the Scots’ starting quarterback, he led the NCAA Division III in
three categories in 2006: total offense (4,084 yards), passing yards
(3,448) and passing yards per game (344.8).
He also was named the 2006 Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic
Association Most Valuable Player, completing 66 percent of his passes
with 30 touchdowns. He tied an NCAA record with nine consecutive
300-yard passing games, and he set an NCAA Division III record with 10
consecutive 300-yard total offense games.
Brehm holds school season records in passing yards, pass completions,
touchdown passes, fewest interceptions thrown and total offense. He
holds school career records in passing yards, pass completions,
touchdown passes and total offense.
Brehm led the Scots to a 6-4 record in 2006 and has a four-year record
of 26-15 overall and 18-9 in the MIAA. He led the Scots to the MIAA
championship in 2004.
In the classroom, Brehm carried a 3.78 cumulative grade point average and was named to the ESPN The Magazine
Academic All-America Second Team. He graduates with a double major in
business administration and psychology. An active member of Alma’s
Students in Free Enterprise, Brehm dedicated countless hours of service
in area schools.
