Kohtala To Miss Wednesday, Saturday Games This Week
Alma College head coach Ed Kohtala will be absent from the sidelines throughout this week as he will undergo cardiac diagnostic tests, requiring him to miss this week of games. Kohtala will miss Wednesday’s Calvin game and likely Saturday’s game at Kalamazoo with the intent to return for the Feb. 3 home game against Albion College at 8 p.m. In his absence, assistant coaches Rob Boden and Lonnie Griffin will pick up the reins of the Scot program.
Kohtala has coached nearly 700 games in his career as a head high school coach, assistant coach at the Division I level and at Alma College. He has missed only one other game during that time, for the birth of his oldest daughter Camille.

A Look Ahead
Only one home event on this week’s schedule showcases the women’s basketball team against Tri-State in a mid-week matchup. The Scots host the Thunder at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday in Cappaert Gymnasium. Alma enters the week 7-10 overall and 3-7 in MIAA action and has lost its last four consecutive games. The Maroon and Cream have not won on their home court since a January 2, 58-51 win against Albion.
The men’s team has struggled, losing its last five games, with the last two being decided by six points or less. Alma is 2-16 on the season and 1-7 in MIAA games and hits the road to face Calvin mid-week and Kalamazoo on the weekend.
And finally, it’s the time of year when spring sports begin. No kidding, spring sports are in season, despite the snow covering the ground in Alma! Men’s tennis travels to Indiana for a weekend of play against Wabash and Huntington to open the 2007 schedule. The women’s team is set to debut the following weekend while softball, baseball and track and field have begun indoor practices.

Alma College’s partnership with the Pine River Superfund Citizen Task Force, an EPA-sanctioned Community Advisory Group (CAG), received the 2008 Jimmy and Rosalynn Carter Partnership Award for Campus-Community Collaboration, sponsored by Michigan Campus Compact. The Task Force is recognized as one of the most influential and active CAGs nationally and as having the largest membership of any CAG in the United States.
