A Look Ahead
Alma is busy this week with three home basketball games - a men’s and women’s basketball doubleheader Wednesday and a men’s game on Jan. 27. The men’s junior varsity team hosts games Monday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 12:45 p.m.
Swimming wrapped up its home schedule last Saturday and has just one remaining dual meet at Hope College this weekend before the MIAA Championships Feb. 9-11.

Scouting the Scots
Men’s Basketball struggled last week, dropped games to Tri-State and Hope as they wrapped up a three-game road swing, going 0-3 on the road. Against Tri-State, the Scots kept it close but a large first-half deficit proved too much to overcome.
Against Hope, the Scots struggled offensively with a low field goal percentage from the field as the Flying Dutchmen held the Scots to just 32 percent from the field. For the season, Alma is 2-14 and 1-5 in MIAA action. The Scots are averaging 63.6 points per game as compared to their opponents’ 77.8 points per game. As a team, Alma is shooting 40 percent from the field while Scot opponents shoot over 46 percent on average.

Women’s Basketball had just one game last week, hosting fourth-ranked Hope College last Wednesday, losing to the Flying Dutch 69-46 in Cappaert Gymnasium. With a break in the schedule, Alma enjoyed a weekend off from competition. Alma is currently 7-8 on the season and 3-5 in MIAA competition. The Scots are averaging 59.8 points per game while opponents average 63.3 points per contest. The Scots are shooting over 40 percent from the field while limiting their competition to just 36 percent from the same range.

Swimming & Diving hosted its final home meet of the season, falling to nationally ranked Olivet in both men’s and women’s competition. Lifetime best times were seen by virtually every Alma swimmer despite the team loss. On the men’s side, Spencer Johnson was a dual-event winner in both the 100 and 200 backstroke. Senior Brent Gostomski took individual honors in the 100 butterfly while Luke Livingston and Matt Davis turned in second place performances in the 1000 free and 200 butterfly, respectively.
The women’s team saw a dual-event winner in Caylee Coe, taking first in the 500 free and 100 backstroke while Emily Smith won the 200 individual medley. Sara Swanton turned in a second place finish in the 100 fly.

Spring Term at Alma is a one-month immersion on a single academic topic that offers learning experiences not typically available during the more traditional 15-week fall and winter terms. For example, during Spring Term ‘07 students explored important cultural sites in China, worked to restore a Jewish Holocaust cemetery in Poland, analyzed ethic politics in Scotland, and studied medieval literature in London.
