Dancer Profile: Maria Taylor
Although Maria Taylor had taken ballet since 4 years old, she gave it up altogether after her first highland dance lesson, a decision she has never regretted.
“It’s exhilarating to be doing the same dance form that Scottish warriors did centuries ago!” she says. “I love performing.”

Competing is a highlight for this ambitious dancer, who recently qualified for nationals.
“I think competition is a great way to test yourself,” she says. “People say you dance best when you pretend no one is watching, but I would dance my best with a million people watching.”
The Farmington Hills senior has gained a strong circle of friends in the highland dancing community. Some of them attend Alma College, where she is pursuing an English major and a French minor.
“I love reading and writing, so studying languages is a perfect fit for me,” she says. “The English faculty members push me to excel beyond what I think I am capable of doing, which is why I love Alma.”
Taylor also enjoys the dance instruction of Kate DeGood. With her guidance, she has been able to continue her competitive highland dance career throughout college, a possibility unique to Alma.
“The Kiltie Dancers provide a rare opportunity to perform with a highland dance troupe,” she says. “We gain experience with choreography, and Kate is an inspiring director.”
