Scottish Arts Scholarships: Piping


Scholarships are available. To be considered, you’ll need to apply for admission to Alma and arrange an audition with Andrew Duncan, Piping Director and Co-Coordinator of Highland Arts. Scholarship Amounts

Standard Performing Arts Scholarship Award in Piping:

  • Freshmen: $1,500
  • Sophomores: $1,500
  • Juniors: up to $2,000
  • Seniors: up to $2,500

Distinguished Scholarship Award in Piping:

  • All Students: Up to Full Tuition

Scholarship Requirements

To maintain a Distinguished Scholarship Award in Piping, students must:

  • Demonstrate above-average progress in Music 154. This includes, but is not limited to, actively participating in ensemble and solo performances and rehearsals as requested by the Piping Director or other Alma College administrators.
  • Demonstrate leadership in the Alma College community and positively represent Alma College and the Piping program at all times.
  • Take Music 392 (private lessons) in order to further develop and maintain their skills.

To maintain a standard Performing Arts Scholarship Award in Piping, students must:

  • Demonstrate average progress in Music 154. This includes, but is not limited to, actively participating in ensemble and solo performances and rehearsals as requested by the Piping Director or other Alma College administrators.
  • Demonstrate leadership in the Alma College community and positively represent Alma College and the Piping program at all times.
  • Students are strongly encouraged to take Music 192 or 392 (private lessons) in order to further develop and maintain their skills.

Audition Information

Candidates will be asked to perform the following:

  • Scotland the Brave
  • Wings
  • Murdo’s Wedding

They also need to perform 3–5 minutes consisting of music of their choice. All music must be memorized.

For the Distinguished Award, students also must submit three (3) letters of recommendation and a recording consisting of 6–8 minutes of their own choice. The music should highlight the student’s strengths as a player. The total playing time does not have to be continuous but should total 6–8 minutes of actual music. Letters and recordings should be submitted at the same time.

 

Alma College trustees have adopted a master plan that provides a direction and set of priorities for the development of the physical campus. Key components include an emphasis on advanced and interactive learning, prioritized building renovations, housing initiatives that accommodate enrollment growth, a reconfiguration of parking lots and green spaces, and campus growth plans linked to the Alma downtown business environment.

Major: Exercise and Health Science, Psychology

Mary Kay Ecken gained a wide variety of skills by double majoring in exercise and health science and psychology.

“The combination of science, fitness and psychology prepared me for physical therapy school,” the 1995 graduate says. “As much as I need my medical and fitness knowledge, I use psychology to motivate patients every day!”
