Scottish Arts Scholarship

Alma College awards Scottish Arts Scholarships to students with a demonstrated high level of skills in highland dancing, drumming, fiddling or piping. The scholarship amount ranges from $1,500 for freshmen and sophomores to up to $2,500 for upperclassmen, depending on faculty evaluations.

There is also a Distinguished Scottish Arts Scholarship for students who demonstrate exemplary performance in these areas.

2011 Highland Dancers at Alma College

Allison Gibson is a Scottish Highland Dancer who has been dancing for about 10 years, winning two championships.

“Alma College attracts dancers mostly because of the history of champions that it produces,” the senior says. “It was very exciting for me that I could receive a scholarship to continue with something I love.”

“I have been able to share my talent with classmates, which I never had been able to do before. The Scottish Arts are incorporated into everyday living at Alma, which is something that isn’t seen very often,” she says.

Laurel Tilot has been playing the bagpipes for three years, becoming interested after attending the Alma Highland Festival with her family.

“The scholarship allows me to meet new people that play pipes. That’s something that I wasn’t able to find in Saginaw,” the sophomore says.

Students interested in highland dancing should contact Kate DeGood. Those interested in drumming, fiddling or piping should contact Andrew Duncan.

Alma College graduates have extraordinary placement rates into medical and law schools. Alma’s 84 percent placement rate into medical school compares to a 46.3 percent national average. Alma’s placement rate for law school is 86.9 percent, compared to a 66.8 percent national average.

For a chemistry and biology double major who hopes to become a physician, a stand-out résumé is as vital as a good bedside manner. That’s why Rochester Hills senior Jared Kilpatrick chose Alma College.
