Dance at Alma

At the bar

The vibrant dance program at Alma College adds courses and performance opportunities nearly every year. Dance majors learn their art in a liberal arts setting that encourages a broad understanding of dance and its importance in society. Technique classes are offered in ballet, pointe, modern, jazz and tap, and the dance curriculum also offers courses in choreography and composition, dance history and criticism. A Bachelor of Arts in dance is offered.

Other distinctive features of Alma’s dance program include:

  • The Alma College Dance Company — Open by audition, this 30-member company performs three major concerts each year as well as lecture-demonstrations and smaller shows. Students earn college credit for participation in the company.

  • The Alma Highland Dancers — This lively co-ed dance group brings Alma’s Scottish heritage to life and offers instruction in Highland dance at beginner and advanced levels.

  • Guest performers and choreographers — Recently Alma students have had the opportunity to work with dance artists-in-residence from the Martha Graham Dance Company, River North Dance Company, Indianapolis Ballet Theatre, Grand Rapids Ballet and Interlochen Arts Camp.

  • Spring Term opportunities — A Spring Term dance course during takes students to New York City, London, Toronto and Russia to attend professional performances.

Students conducting research side-by-side with faculty has been an Alma legacy for generations. Alma students team up with faculty on scholarly research or to collaborate on creative or performing arts projects. An annual Honors Day features student presentations, performances and exhibits. Many students present such work at regional, national and international meetings.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
