Major Gifts

Endowed Chair -- $1 million and Above

One of the most prestigious gifts is an endowed chair. This gift allows the College to attract and retain outstanding faculty by offering additional salary incentives outside the normal scale. The selected professor assumes the chair as part of their title, retaining the honor until retirement when the next endowed chair is named.

Professorship -- $250,000 and Above

Through the income of an endowed professorship the College can provide an increment beyond a full professor's average salary. This enables the College to attract and retain the very best faculty, an important distinction for Alma College. The faculty member carries the named professorship title for the academic year.

Lectureship -- $100,000 and Above

Establishing a lectureship supports the cost of bringing nationally and internationally recognized speakers to campus annually. Emphasizing areas of personal interest, donors can assist in exposing undergraduate students to significant issues through a lectureship series named for the donor.

Achievement Awards -- $50,000 and Above

Recognizing outstanding faculty and student achievements with small stipends each year is another measure of institutional quality. Existing awards include the Alden W. Hanson Award for student creative problem solving, the Barlow Awards for Faculty Excellence, the Lobdell-Emery Teaching Prize recognizing a non-tenured faculty member, and the Barlow Trophy for student leadership and achievement. Other awards could be established to recognize student or faculty research, outstanding faculty scholarships, curricular innovation or other notable achievements. A donor may choose an area of interest and establish the selection criteria.

Academic Programs/Library Resources -- $25,000+

A gift to support a donor's area of interest enhances students' coursework and enables the College to develop additional academic programs -- another measure of quality.

Areas which could be supported include library acquisitions, student overseas travel, Model United Nations Team, performing arts group tours, academic majors or minors and other special activities.

Named Endowed Scholarships -- $10,000 and Above

Donors can name the scholarship and also specify criteria for eligibility. These ongoing scholarship funds enable Alma College to maintain maximum enrollment and attract quality students in a competitive market.

How to Make a Gift

Gifts of Cash or Securities

Gifts of cash or securities allow the donor to receive a full tax deduction in the year the gift is made. When appreciated securities are used, the donor receives credit for the current market value of the stock and avoids paying capital gains tax.

Writing a check to Alma College is the most common method of giving. If you file an itemized federal income tax return, your gift may be deducted up to 50 percent of your adjusted gross income. Gifts that exceed the 50 percent limit in any given year can be carried forward for five additional years.

Gifts of appreciated capital assets -- securities, real estate, and personal property -- save taxes twice. The market value of the assets is deductible up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income, but by transferring the asset to Alma College rather than selling it, you avoid payment of a capital gains tax on the appreciation. If you have appreciated assets, consider transferring a portion of them to Alma College rather than writing a check. You can save twice as much.

Advantages:

  • Charitable tax deduction for market value of gift
  • No capital gains tax for securities held long term
  • Alma College receives a gift for immediate use

If you like information on transferring securities electronically or sending stock certificates via postal mail, contact Regional Director of Advancement Brent Domine or 1-800-291-1312.
