Speaking with an Accent

Snow covers the ground and it is down right cold. What else is new? This is Alma, Michigan, in February. It is the heart of the basketball and swim seasons. As a former coach for 26 years and a player/fan before and after that, I still get excited witnessing a buzzer beating 3-point shot or a bang-bang finish to the 400 freestyle relay. Yet, it is also the time of year when multitudes of performing arts students are busy putting on theatre productions or preparing for choir tours, band concerts and dance ensembles. Anyone who thinks winter in general is a slow time with little to do, has not been on the Alma College campus.

Our students are involved, and they are challenged. They are challenged in the classroom. They get involved in many of the campus wide organizations. And, they are involved and challenged as athletes and performing artists. By being involved and challenged every day they are becoming successful and paving the way for their future.

Now, how many of you from personal experience can appreciate what I am saying? A large number I am sure. Did you know that almost 40 percent of our students participate in intercollegiate athletics and another 33 percent in the performing arts? Some enjoy both. Combined, that totals more than 70 percent of the entire student body! It speaks volumes for the types of programs we have here at Alma, and to the quality of well-rounded young men and women that grace our campus. So, when you get the chance, come see a game or performance, refer a prospective student to a coach or an admissions representative, and support your College with an annual contribution. By doing that you will be helping our students to achieve the type of experiences that so many of us were once grateful to have as Alma Scots.

So, again… thank you for staying connected, caring and sharing so much!

Maroon & Cream Forever,

Alma’s close faculty-student interaction provides numerous benefits such as the ability to do undergraduate research on a graduate level. Alma’s professors treat students more as peers welcoming student input and collaboration on faculty projects. When students are involved in research, faculty aggressively pursue publication of findings including students as co-authors.
