Speaking with an Accent

Spring is in full swing and summer is right around the corner. So many plans to make, so little time. There will be graduation parties, picnics, vacations, ball games, gardening and more. If you have not already done so I would like you to make just one more plan. Make a gift to the Alma Fund before June 30th.

A wise person once said that “life is measured not by the millions of breaths we take, but by the moments that take our breath away…” A million dollar gift was just that sort of moment for Alma College. The Art ‘38 and Carra Jones ‘42 Smith Alumni Challenge has energized us and raised the bar for all alumni. A million “thank yous” to the Smiths would never be enough to express our gratitude.

Actually, only a few in the family of Alma College alumni and friends have the ability to make a gift of a million dollars (although I don’t want to underestimate anyone — we’d be happy to hear from you!), but we can all do our part for the Challenge. Alma needs many gifts each year to keep our busy campus thriving and growing. Each contribution, large or small, is a tangible way of expressing your personal commitment to the College we love so much.

The goal is simple and challenging, yet attainable — reach 50 percent alumni participation or 5,000 alumni givers by June 30. The Alma College Alumni Board and I want you to help us reach this lofty mark and get “counted in.” The best way to do this is by supporting the Smith Alumni Challenge. Your participation will count much more than the size of the gift. Now, if you have already made a contribution this year, thank you ever so much. If not, there is still plenty of time to make a difference and help us reach our goal. We all have fond memories of our days at Alma and an investment in the lives of current Alma students and future alumni will ensure that those kinds of memories be carried with them as well.

So, again, thank you for staying connected, caring and sharing so much!

Maroon & Cream Forever,
Bob

Departments: English

Jeffrey Cordell, assistant professor of English at Alma College, uses literature to visit other worlds. While the possibility of multiple worlds and universes has always fascinated him, initially he planned to access these worlds in a very different way, he says.

“I really wanted to be a physicist,” he says. “Though it seems like a huge jump, science and English actually have much more in common than people might think because both allow you to observe detail in a deeper way.”
