In a personal photo from January 2005, Jamie Blow '84 holds a young boy in an internally displaced persons camp in Kabul, Afghanistan. “These people had been living in this squatters’ camp for several years but due to the snow and cold were suffering,” says Blow. “Part of my role during this mission was to walk around the camp with an engineer and look at what we could potentially do to improve conditions. During my tour, I came across this young boy who had a cutaneous leishmaniasis lesion on his left cheek. It had been treated with a local remedy, which caused the purple coloring. He will bear a scar on his face for the rest of his life.
