Helping others while you learn

An Alma student reads to children during an event in downtown Alma

Eighty-five percent of Alma College student participate in service activities each year. While some of them engage in service learning, which combines meaningful community service opportunities with selected courses, others participate in Alternative Breaks, Greek philanthropies, and service-oriented clubs and groups.

Each term, the college offers a schedule of available service learning courses that will allow you to apply your classroom learning to a real-life situation in the community. By applying your new knowledge through service to others, you will learn the material more quickly and it will stay with you longer. And it’s more fun!

Other programs available to students interested in service, volunteerism and civic engagement include:

  • Community service through student organizations,
  • Off-campus work-study positions with non-profit and service organizations,
  • The service house, a small housing option focused on community service, and
  • Michigan Campus Compact, which supports Michigan Service Scholars Program, Service Leadership Camp and various service-learning grant opportunities.
