Hello! It has been almost a month since our last posting of the Kiltie Konnection – can you believe Spring is just around the corner? This month’s issue focuses on what to consider when choosing a college. Although there many things to contemplate, we hope our list will help you define what you are looking for and, in turn, narrow your list of potential colleges! Feel free to print a PDF version of this outline for future reference.
Size
Small, medium or large? Depending on your learning style, you may need the one-on-one interactions of a small school, or the independent learning style of a large school. Don’t forget to consider the student body population – think about diversity, age, and where the majority of students call home. If you are unsure about size, ask your parents and teachers for input and visit a variety of colleges to experience the size for yourself!
Academic Focus: Majors and Degrees Offered
Look for schools that offer a variety of academic interests. Some schools will let you design a program tailored to your passions, while others will have almost every academic interest under the sun. If you are unsure of what you want to study, don’t fret! Focus on colleges where you can get a taste of many areas before deciding on a major. Always feel free to ask your admissions officers what resources are available for major exploration.
Athletics, Activities and Programs
Besides attending classes, what else do you want to do in college? Play for the basketball team? Perform in the dance company? Study abroad in Spain? Investigate what activities and organizations colleges offer and if they apply to you. If not, ask if you can create new opportunities on campus. You are at college to learn, but you want to have fun in the process!
Cost and Financial Aid
The cost of college is a major consideration for almost every student. Ask what types of scholarships are offered (academic, athletic, religious, performing arts, etc.) and if they are renewable. What is the average financial aid package for students? How many students receive financial aid? If you are truly interested in a college but nervous about cost, stick with them through financial aid season in March – you might be surprised by what you find in your financial aid package.
Your On-Campus Experience
Having an awesome college experience has a great deal to do with fit and feel. Find a school that offers the academics and activities that interest you. Once you feel comfortable on a campus, you can start making an impact in your own life, as well as the world around you.
