The Gerontology Program at Alma College is an interdisciplinary program incorporating the study of physiology, psychology, neurophysiology, religious studies and sociology to explore the needs of the fastest growing segment of our population — the elderly.
We look at many different effects of aging using information from a number of fields. For example, the sociology course explores aging as part of a normal life process and how the elderly respond to and are affected by current social problems.
A course in medical ethics explores the ethical concerns of an aging society. The Psychology Department helps students to understand the specialized cognitive, emotional and behavioral processes that accompany old age. Biological and physiological needs of the elderly are further explored through the Exercise and Health Science Department.
Much of Alma’s Gerontology Program revolves around practical experience and hands-on field research. Each of the faculty members in the research program has extensive practical and research experience with elders.
The College’s close working relationship with Masonic Pathways, located in the city of Alma, provides students with access to Pathway’s facilities, staff and residents.
In addition, students have access to all the equipment and facilities in the Exercise and Health Science and Psychology departments. Faculty and staff assist in classroom work and independent studies.
