Workstudy -Community Service

A limited number of community service workstudy positions are available off campus in the Alma area. Listed below are examples of positions that students can apply for that meet community service workstudy eligibility.

  • Alma Public Schools - (Explore Program) After School academic mentoring, recreation, and enrichment programs
  • America Reads/Math Counts Tutoring at varous locations: Alma Public Schools, Head Start Program, Reading Buddies Program at Hillcrest Elementary, and other elementary locations
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters Program - Mentoring Coordinator position
  • United Way - Public Relations position 10 hours per week (within walking distance)
  • Mid Michigan Am. Red Cross Service Center - Communication Aide
  • Women's Aid Service - Crisis Line Shelter Position
  • Other positions can be established with non-profit service agencies

Bob Devaney, a 1939 graduate of Alma College, went on to become known as one of the greatest coaches in collegiate football history. In his 11 years as head coach at Nebraska, Devaney produced 11 winning seasons with two national championships. He was inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 1981. At Alma he played end and was the Scots’ Most Valuable Player in 1938.

Dr. John Davis
Departments: Integrative Physiology & Health Science

Taking the Integrative Physiology and Health Science major to new heights, Dr. John Davis has conducted classes on some of the highest peaks in North America. In doing research on altitude physiology, Davis has taken Alma College students on several research trips to the Rocky Mountains in Colorado to study the acute and chronic effects of moderate altitude exposure on exercise and cardiovascular responses.
