POE Profile: April LaCroix

A Passion For Environmental Sustainability

April LaCroix

April LaCroix '05 developed a POE in environmental policy that included a focus on the natural science behind environmental challenges because she wanted to achieve more than the conventional environmental studies minor.

Her program dealt with the laws and systems that address the human impact on the environment.

“Many policy makers do not understand the natural processes behind environmental problems, and I knew that I could be more effective by being able to speak both languages,” says LaCroix.

LaCroix credits the research and outreach projects that were part of her POE with helping her earn a postgraduate Fulbright Scholarship to study water policy at the University of Toronto, where she recently completed a master’s degree in geography.

Her Alma preparation also helped secure her first job in environmental policy as an intern with the non-profit League of Conservation Voters Education Fund in Washington, D.C.

“In order to achieve your goals and become an effective advocate for change, you must continually build upon your experiences to lead you to where you want to be,” she says.

As an example, her internship in Washington, D.C., helped her obtain a position with the Foreign Agriculture Service, a division of the U.S. Department of Agriculture that represents U.S. interests abroad, at the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru.

While a student at Alma, she was an active participant in the planning of the new Wright Hall, Alma College’s first environmentally sustainable residence hall.

“Creating a POE can be a lengthy process, but with the help of professors and dedication to your POE vision, it is attainable,” says LaCroix.

“Good pursuits lead you to more good pursuits,” she says. “A POE is a great avenue for starting your path.”

Many of Alma’s pre-law graduates go on to attend prestigious law schools, including 2004 graduate Jessica Karbowski, who was accepted at Yale, Stanford and Harvard law schools and is attending Yale. Colin McGlaughlin, a 20004 graduated enrolled at Case Western Reserve Law School, is the first American to intern at the International Criminal Court at The Hague in the Netherlands.

Spring Term courses offer students opportunities to break out of the “Alma Bubble.” Off-campus study, especially in a foreign country, shows you how you relate to the rest of the world and how the rest of the world views American people, politics and policies. You can then integrate your real world experiences into your academic programs and your future career.
