Student Profile: Jon Haley

As 2013 Class President, College Democrats Vice President, PRIDE Treasurer and Student Congress Secretary, Jon Haley clearly is taking advantage of all that comes his way.

“What it boils down to, is that Alma attracts doers and leaders, and that’s why students are involved in so much,” says the political science and Spanish double major. “I have a diverse set of interests, so I like to be involved.”

The Harrison junior also is a member of the Center for Responsible Leadership, Model United Nations, Alpha Phi Omega and Spanish Club.

In addition, Alternative Break has been an important part of his Alma experience. On a recent trip, he worked on a rural-housing project in a poverty-stricken area of Tennessee.

“Alma offers you a great education, but you have to take what you learn and apply it to the real world,” he says. “Alternative Break is a great avenue for this.”

Haley also “highly recommends” Ghost Ranch, which he says is a great experience for more reasons than he can count.

“If you’re on the outside, you can’t understand Ghost Ranch, and if you’re on the inside, you can’t explain it,” he says. “Through the leadership activities at Ghost Ranch, I realized my own potential.”

Alma College boasts a 13-to-1 student-to-teacher ratio, a liberal arts approach to undergraduate education, 33 academic majors, self-designed programs of emphasis, pre-professional programs in law and medicine, and an intensive Spring Term that provides opportunities for innovative courses, travel classes, research and internships.

Graduation: 2014
Major: Mathematics and Physics

What do you get when you cross a love for science with a passion for the saxophone?

Meet Annie Bruce, a Lansing junior and liberal arts extraordinaire who is happy to not be limited to one interest at Alma College. As a result, she says, she is a well-rounded person.

“I love that I’m able to pursue multiple interests at Alma,” she says. “It’s one of the reasons why I came to Alma, and now, I’m a mathematics and physics major who is heavily involved in music. I play in a saxophone quartet with three music majors!”
