Are you creative? Artistic? Technically or scientifically savvy? Do you have a passion for educating the public on important issues? Want to create positive change in society?

Alma College’s High School Leadership Academy is prepared to help you to take action.

Academy participants work with Alma College faculty and current students to explore issues and ideas that affect our local, state, national and international communities. The 2013 academy will be held July 7–13, 2013.

Applications should be completed on line by May 24, 2013. Payment of the $125 participation fee is due by June 21, 2013. Checks may be made out to Alma College and sent to Sallie Scheide, Center for Student Opportunity, Alma College, 614 W. Superior St., Alma, MI 48801. You can also pay online at www.alma.edu/HSLApayment.

Please contact Sallie at leadacademy@alma.edu for additional information about the academy or payment.

Past participants have focused on moving our communities to being healthy, economically vigorous and environmentally sustainable. Using the expertise of faculty and the rich array of multimedia tools on campus, participants created an original documentary video that explored where their communities are today and what they might be in the near future.

In addition to developing and applying leadership skills, students will gain experience in conducting field research, persuasive storytelling, digital video editing and movie making.

You also have the opportunity to expand your leadership skills through interactive sessions in which values, integrity and commitment to action are explored.

The academy incorporates scholarship, stewardship and leadership to prepare the next generation of leaders for a changing world. It is made possible through a generous gift from The Dow Chemical Company.

The High School Leadership Academy is a residential program for students completing their junior year of high school.

Dr. Brandi Stupica
Departments: Psychology

What do people do? Why do they do what they do? Though Brandi Stupica, assistant professor of psychology, doesn’t claim to hold all the answers, she has still dedicated her life to figuring people out.

“I went into college thinking pre-med and quickly switched to English, all while taking psychology classes and really liking them,” she says. “Even when I declared my psychology major, I thought it was just a back-up! I finally realized all my behaviors were indicating that psychology was the thing I was really interested in.”
