International Leadership Institute

An International Leadership Institute was held at Wroxton College in Oxfordshire, England from August 1-11, 2007.  The Wroxton Centre for Global Dialogue's faculty and guest speakers provided programming on European topics, including the European Union, the UK automotive and chemical industries, environmental issues, industrial relations and national politics.  While in residence, students participated in the Centre's signature workshop on conflict resolution.  Under the guidance of Alma College faculty and staff, Fellows pursued communities of interest that linked organizations in the UK with comparable organizations and agencies in the US.  Programming at the institute links global issues to Fellows' home communities.

While at Wroxton, students had an opportunity to journey to Oxford University for a lecture on British politics.  Excursions included Stratford-upon-Avon for a performance at the Royal Shakespeare Theatre and a day of exploration in London.  Alma students were even seen playing cricket on the grounds of Wroxton College during their stay.

Future venues for International Leadership Institutes under consideration are Juarez, Mexico; Johannesburg, South Africa; St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands as well as Wroxton College.

Many of Alma’s pre-law graduates go on to attend prestigious law schools, including 2004 graduate Jessica Karbowski, who was accepted at Yale, Stanford and Harvard law schools and is attending Yale. Colin McGlaughlin, a 20004 graduated enrolled at Case Western Reserve Law School, is the first American to intern at the International Criminal Court at The Hague in the Netherlands.

Alma’s close faculty-student interaction provides numerous benefits such as the ability to do undergraduate research on a graduate level. Alma’s professors treat students more as peers welcoming student input and collaboration on faculty projects. When students are involved in research, faculty aggressively pursue publication of findings including students as co-authors.
