Alma College is on a '4-4-1' term schedule.  This fairly unique academic calendar allows us to use the spring term to work with students in courses and projects that help them develop in new directions, broaden their perspectives on the world, and even fill some general education and major requirements.  During spring term, students usually take only one course and may meet for several hours a day for that course.  Some of the courses listed are entirely 'on campus' some travel locally, and others travel extensively within and beyond U.S. borders.

Students are required to have two spring terms prior to graduation.  One Spring Term needs to be an 'S' course.  'S' courses cross geographic, cultural, or disciplinary boundaries, and take advantage of the unique format of spring term.  Some of the 'S' courses include extensive travel, while some involve local travel.  The opportunities available in spring term courses have helped many students focus their plans for a major, develop career interests, and deepen their cultural understandings.

Spring term provides a great opportunity for students to engage in the life of the campus, and to explore new venues off campus.

The memory and spiritual ideals of the late Bishop Thomas Makarios remain alive in a figurative sculpture that was dedicated in May 2009 near the center of campus. The Bishop, professor of religious studies at Alma for 25 years, was founder of the American Diocese of the Malankara Orthodox Church of India and the first Metropolitan Bishop of Canada, United Kingdom and Europe, and South Africa.
