Student Profile: Lindsey Voss
Alma junior Lindsey Voss is majoring in sociology because she wants to make a difference in the world.
“When I first came to Alma, I was intending on majoring in math,” the Women’s Studies minor says, “but after I took a course in sociology, I learned that I felt more passionate about this subject than math. I chose sociology mainly because it is a subject that affects everyone.”
A Spring Term trip to Chicago opened her eyes to the world around her and changed her life. The course required students to read literary works about the city before visiting.

“Our time there was spent mostly learning about and interacting with the different neighborhoods of Chicago,” she says. “It was so life-changing for me because I am from a small town, and the city offered the freedom to move from one place to another very easily. After staying there for a week I really felt like I could live there.”
Voss plans on attending graduate school after her Alma education to work with the elderly or in health care.
The small campus at Alma offers her a chance to know her professors as personally as she knows her fellow students, and the focus on liberal arts allows her to fully understand how her chosen major fits in with the world around her.
“At Alma, we must take general education classes from other courses outside of our major,” she says. “This results in giving students room to experience other majors, and even switch majors if needed, like in my case.”
She plays the clarinet in the Kiltie Marching Band and Wind Ensemble, and is a member of Alpha Phi Omega (a service fraternity) and Alpha Gamma Delta (a social sorority.)
