Alma College 2002 graduate Cecily Ogden credits Catherine Fobes with getting her involved and interested in sociology. “I knew I wanted to go into social work, and after I had sociology 101 with Dr. Fobes, I knew I wanted to take more of her classes,” she says.
“ I knew I wanted to go into social work, and after I had sociology 101 with Dr. Fobes, I knew I wanted to take more of her classes. ”
Ogden’s Alma education prepared her for her master's degree in terms of coursework, reading and writing papers, as well as preparing her for the work world by allowing her the opportunity to grow socially, have leadership opportunities and work with others.
After graduating from Alma, Ogden earned her Master in Social Work degree from the University of Michigan. She is currently a school counselor for Croswell Lexington Community Schools in Croswell, Mich.
One of the experiences that stood out to her was her spring term trip to Peru, which was a sociology of gender course that looked at gender relationships in Peru.
“It exposed me to a different culture and living with a host family,” she says. “I was immersed in the culture.”
Ogden said she was originally attracted to Alma because she wanted to go to a small school and felt comfortable when she visited the campus.
While at Alma, Ogden played percussion in the Kilte Marching Band, and was in the percussion ensemble, Alpha Gamma Delta, Psi Chi, and Order of Omega.
