Student Profile: Katie Koechling
Katie Koechling was drawn to sociology at Alma because of how it interacts with her daily life.
“The idea that this major is based upon human and societal interactions allow for me to study my field constantly out of the classroom,” the Wheaton, Ill. senior says. “I often am able to apply theories and concepts learned to my everyday life.”
Koechling would like to pursue a career in social work. She says the diversity of her sociology and anthropology coursework is giving her insight into what that career will look like.
“The idea that this major is based upon human and societal interactions allow for me to study my field constantly out of the classroom.”
“I have chosen this professional path because I often see the labels and limits placed on many human beings in and by our society, and I hope to be able to remove these labels and limitations through listening, learning and better educating those around me,” she says.
A softball coach introduced her to the college. She plays for Alma’s softball team and also plays violin in the Symphony Orchestra. She was drawn to the College because if its liberal arts curriculum.
“The sociology program has given me a real sense of a liberal arts education on a level that many other fields cannot,” she says. “I often find myself relating things I learn in class, readings, videos and projects to other genres offered at Alma, as well making me very aware of what is happening in the world around me.”
